Gameday Guide For Parents
Welcome to AYSO! Game days are a fantastic opportunity for your child to enjoy playing soccer, learn valuable life lessons, and build friendships. Your role as a parent is crucial in creating a positive and supportive environment for everyone involved. Here’s your quick guide to navigating game day. Read the A Parent’s Guide to AYSO for more info.
Essential reminders
Get There Early: Make sure you leave enough time to find your team and get settled.
No Jewelry: No Jewelry is allowed (more specific guidance can be found here), even earring studs.
Equipment: Shin guards are mandatory, and soccer cleats are highly recommended. Bring a water bottle, and don’t forget your jersey (socks, shorts, shirt).
Respect the Referees: AYSO referees are volunteers. Their decisions are final on the field. If you have concerns, address them to refadmin@mpsoccer.org, do not argue with the referees!
Snacks: Make sure your team has a team snack volunteer, and if not, talk to the coach or team parents.
Field Setup: Check with your coach or team parent(s) if any volunteers are needed for field setup.
Where to Sit: Spectators should position themselves on the designated sidelines, opposite the players' benches and coaches (U6 and U8 parents may need to be more involved as requested by coaches).
Other info
Before the Game:
Check the Schedule: Confirm the game time, field location, and any special instructions from the coach or team parent. Arrive at least 15-20 minutes early to allow for parking, finding the field, and a relaxed warm-up.
Communication with the Coach: If your child will be late or absent, inform the coach as soon as possible. If you have any concerns, address them with the coach privately and respectfully, outside of game time.
Understand the Rules: Familiarize yourself with the basic rules of soccer and the AYSO philosophy of Kids Zone (see below).
During the Game:
Be a Positive Cheerleader: Encourage all players on both teams with positive and supportive comments. Focus on effort, good plays, and teamwork. Avoid yelling instructions or criticisms at the players or referees.
Support the Coaches: The coaches are volunteers dedicating their time to help the kids learn and enjoy the game. Trust their judgment and avoid undermining their instructions from the sideline.
Let the Kids Play: Resist the urge to constantly shout instructions or direct your child's every move. Let them experience the game, make their own decisions, and learn from their experiences.
Embrace the AYSO Philosophy: Remember that AYSO emphasizes positive coaching, good sportsmanship, player development, and participation. Winning is secondary to these core principles.
After the Game:
Positive Reinforcement: Praise your child’s effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship, regardless of the outcome. Focus on specific positive actions you observed.
Keep it Fun: Avoid replaying mistakes or dwelling on the score. Keep the post-game conversation light and focused on the positive aspects of the experience.
Hydration and Nutrition: Ensure your child drinks water and has a healthy snack after the game to replenish their energy.
Thank the Coach and Referee: A simple "thank you" goes a long way in acknowledging the volunteers who make these games possible.
Team Spirit: Encourage your child to thank their teammates and congratulate the opposing team on a game well played.
Leave No Trace: Please ensure you clean up any trash or belongings you brought to the field.
AYSO Kids Zone Pledge:
As an AYSO parent, please abide by the Kids Zone pledge:
Kids are #1: Their well-being and enjoyment are paramount.
Fun-N-Fair: Emphasize effort, learning, and fair play.
Fan Behavior: Be positive and supportive of all players.
Respect Refs: Acknowledge that referees are volunteers doing their best.
Parent Power: Your positive influence shapes your child's experience.
By following these simple guidelines, you can help ensure a positive and rewarding game day experience for your child and all involved in AYSO. Enjoy the season!
