AYSO is 100 percent volunteer organization; we all do it for the kids. Each season we need as many referees as coaches (if not more) and refereeing is easier and less of a time commitment - in most cases you will be able to referee your own child's games. AYSO is about playing Fun, Fair and Safe. Our referee training is what makes it possible. If there is no trained, certified official to referee a game the kids don't get to play.  We will provide you with everything you need to know to referee, no experience or prior knowledge of the game is required! All you need to become a referee or move to the next level in refereeing is on this page - if you can't find it here, please contact the Regional Referee Administrator.

Overview

All referees must be trained and certified in AYSO.  There are three types of basic training offered by our region (see below for advanced training opportunities):

1) U8 Training: This training takes one night and is usually offered the week before the fall season starts.  This is required for all new Referees for U7 & U8.
2) Regional Training: Regional (also known as Basic) training is a combination of online and a three-hour in-person training. This is required for all new Referees and Assistant Referees for U9 and above.
3) Refresher Training: This is for all currently-certified referees who are looking for a refresher course before the season starts.  You do not need to sign up for Refresher training, just show up for the appropriate course in the Training Schedule below.

In addition to the above, each referee must pass on online course called Safe Haven (see below) and have a current Volunteer form filed with the Region (that was done as part of registration, and must be done annually).

In summary, you'll need the following:

New Referees

  • ALL NEW RFEREES
    • eAYSO Number: needed to track your training and certifications
    • Safe Haven Certification - (Taken Online at AYSOtraining.org)
    • Completed volunteer form at eAYSO.org (see http://www.mpsoccer.org/coaches/finding-your-eayso-number)
  • U7 and U8 Referee - U8 Referee training and certification
  • U9-U12 Referees: Training & Certification as a Basic (Regional) Referee, meaning:
    • The Basic Referee Online Course
    • The Basic Referee Online Companion (in person) course

Returning Referees

  • If you were U8 referee in previous season but will be refereeing U9 or higher (U9+) this season:
    • Basic (Regional) Referee Training & Certification ie, Basic Online course + Online Companion In person Course
    • Current Volunteer Form handed in at registration or via new or renewal at eAYSO.org
  • If you were a Regional, Intermediate, Advanced or National referee in previous season
    • Current Volunteer Form handed in at registration or via new or renewal eAYSO.org
  • If you don't know what level referee you are, please logon to eAYSO and then View Certification then Click Here under Certification
  • Since returning referees have already completed Safe Haven, there's no need to take that again.
  • If you just need uniforms/equipment, come by the trainings (see below) to pick up what you need.

Systems

Our region uses three different systems (take a deep breath):
  • This website, mpsoccer.org, is where once you've logged on you do the following:
    • Register your child to play, and you as a volunteer referee.
      • Signup for the age groups you'd like to ref
    • U9 and older refs schedule themselves for games they'll referee.
    • U10 and older refs enter and submit games cards to the region
  • eAYSO (www.eayso.org)
    • Obtain an eAYSO number
    • Complete Volunteer form and registration
    • Register for a course
  • AYSO Training (www.aysotraining.org)
    • Take the Safe Haven Course
    • Take the Basic Referee Online Course
All of these systems will be explained in their context below and elsewhere in this website.  Once you are done with your training and have your eAYSO number, you typically will do just about everything else on the mpsoccer.org website.  It can be a bit confusing, but most of you will be using just our website, mpsoccer.org, once the season gets started, so bear with us.

Referee Certification Required

Each referee must be certified to the level of his division, or higher. Certification is obtained by completing the appropriate clinics and other requirements. The Recommended Certification shown is the minimum the region recommends for that division.

 Division      Minimum Certification  Recommended Certification
 Kinder           No Referee    No Referee
 U7  U8 Official  U8
 U8  U8 Official  U8
 U9 Regional Regional
 U10
Regional  Regional
 U12 Regional  Intermediate
 U14 Regional  Advanced
 U16 Intermediate  National
 U19 Advanced  National

We are always in need  of Intermediate, Advanced and National Referees for the older divisions games.  We highly encourage previously certified referees to consider advancing their skills in order to better enjoy their refereeing experience and provide the higher level of understanding of the laws and their application needed for the higher divisions.  For information on Intermediate, Advanced and National certification please contact the referee administrator or look up opportunities on eAyso.org.  Golden Gate Camp, right in our back yard is a great opportunity to get your advanced badge training!
And we will pick up the tab!!

If a course is not listed above, or you cannot attend the listed dates, go to eayso.org and click on Lookup to find a class in Section 2, Area A, and fill in the class you're looking for.  There are usually classes nearby.

To signup for a course, note the roster number, logon to eayso.org and click on Signup>Course and fill in the required information.  For classes without roster numbers, go Lookup>Course then search for the type of course you want in Section 2, Area A (or another area if you know what you want). Note: when you signup you need to know you are part of Section 2, Area A, Region 109.

For alternatives to our fall training, there are dozens of U8 and Basic Online Companion Courses being offered in the Section. See below

We'll have uniforms and equipment available for pickup. We'll also provide sandwiches, chips, water.

If you are unable to make the trainings at the times above, please go to the websites below of neighboring regions to attend the appropriate course (follow the instructions on their websites to signup for their classes - note that some of those classes start in August),

OR go to Eayso.org and search for alternative courses

If you take a course in another region, please make note of the of the region you took the course in, the roster number, lead instructor's name, date and place you took the training in case there is a problem with a record of your certification later.  Equipment: also, if you take the course in another region, don't take their equipment (they hate that!) - you'll be able to get that from us either night above or at another location for a week after training.

U7/U8 Referees Note: U7/U8 referees may optionally take the Regional/Basic now and then don't have to take it later. If you think you'll be staying with refereeing we encourage that. And if we do our jobs right, you'll be staying with refereeing.

In addition, all referees must have completed at some point the Safe Haven Course, which is an online course.  If you've already taken and passed it online, you don't need to take it again.

The Regional/Basic Online course may be taken any time before the online companion class.
